One of the most effective ways to “refresh” our faces as we get older is injections (and there is nothing to be scared of). Two of the biggest brands out there are Botox ® and Xeomin ®. Both are FDA approved and effective ways to temporarily soften crow’s feet, brow furrows, frown marks, and give an appearance of an “eye lift”.
So, why would you choose one over the other?
(Add this to our list of our daily decisions, decisions, ladies….)
Both Botox and Xeomin are botulinum toxins (BoNT) that reduce muscle movements that then reduce the look of dynamic wrinkles. There’s lots of articles out there about the science mechanism of it all, but that’s the simple version.
So what makes Botox and Xeomin different?
By the time Xeomin entered the market, Botox was the well-known, brand champ (think of Kleenex and tissues). However, supporters like Christie Brinkley raised awareness about Xeomin as the ‘naked’ or ‘purest’ injectable. As explained in an InStyle article from last year, Xeomin is “minus a few proteins”, with an “extra step of purification so that there is no complexing protein”. The no additional additives has an appeal for patients that prefer a more holistic path. The cost of Xeomin tended to be less per unit, but as its popularity grows, it is more comparable to Botox.
At Marigold Esthetique, we offer both Botox and Xeomin for our clients. Overall, experiences demonstrate both have the same levels of efficacy with the same amount of units, and the same turnaround time for a follow up procedure (but as with any sort of cosmetic treatments, results can differ with each individual).
When a product may no longer work for a client -- some develop antibodies that offset the results of Botox -- we recommend giving Xeomin a try. A few of our “newbie” clients may prefer the comfort level with Botox as the perceived established brand and best with stubborn wrinkles. Others opt for Xeomin, the “purer” version, that may have a less chance of an (very, very uncommon) allergic reaction.
Both have a reward program: Botox users enjoy Brilliant Distinctions and there is the Xperience program for Xeomin clients.
Often it’s easiest when deciding on your treatment to have a consultation first and discuss your options and recommendations. We welcome new friends to schedule a complimentary consultation time with one of our licensed medical injectors, Amy, Lori, and Dr. Riccardo.
If only we could get the same help to make all our other decisions…..
